L31 LAN - LEICESTER
Date: 22/05/2010
Time: 3pm - 3am
Location: Leicester, United Kingdom
12pm:[/color][/b]
Novate turns up at mine and we have a few beers and bbq with my housemates. Give WiLLy a ring and the following conversation occurs:
Sandy: "hey man hows it going?"
WiLLy: "not too good mate"
Sandy: "ah shit an, whats up?"
WiLLY: "ah well... I decided to format my computer this morning"
At this point alarm bells are ringing
WiLLY: "..yeah im having to back everything up on to another computer"
DOH! WiLLy assures me it will all be sorted and he should be with us sometime before sign ups.

Novate and myself head over to the sign ups and get to meet some of the players we are going to be up against. There was an interesting variety of nationalities (English, Chinese, American, French, Dutch obv) and it turned out there were some people who like to take things a bit more seriously. Some teams were there in their sponsored gear (tshirts etc) and we got chatting to one team whose players have played in the top 5 UK teams. One of the guys there was owner of the main UK CS website www.uk-ct.net/ and their team even had a 'manager' with them (lol).
4:30pm
WiLLy turns up! We drink more.
6:00pm:
We head over to the venue and start setting up. Unfortunately it seems as though they hadnt prepared enough space for the amount of people there and after a bit of rushing around they managed to find an extra table for the two teams without seating (us being one of them). It was unfortunate as we had a bad area to to play in. WiLLY had to keep moving alot as people kept walking by and we all had very limited mouse space.
We installed all the games and the install was a very nicely designed thing that installed 4 games in under 3 minutes getting us ready for all of the tournaments (CS, AOE, TM, UT) although we ended up only playing the CS and UT tournis. (AOE and TM looked a bit shit)

We started as Terrorist against this French team and absolutely dominated. It took a bit of time to adjust playing on lan but as Terrorist our tactics were perfect. We were mixing up the splits and agressive play which we have started to use lately and it really showed off. This side ended up 15-0.
As Counter-Terrorist it was a walk in the park as it was pretty impossible for them to come back. We took the victory 1-0 making the overall result

It appeared that from the first round there was a gulf in talent among the teams. 3 of the teams had all won 16-0 in the first round and with a bit of luck we missed the otehr 2 teams in the semi final playing the 4th team who won. Losers ended up entering the 'losers bracket' where they would eventually fight it out for 3rd place.

It was a difficult situation to be in as this team were DEAD opposite us. Two of their players could screen watch Willy which made tactics slightly difficult. We called early that WiLLy would never take the bomb and often he split off in a seperate direction to what the attack would be going initially.
After winning a knife round we chose Terrorist and our recent online games helped alot with tactics. We had some REALLY strong attacks on B and after a few close rounds early on we took control of the game convincingly. I think we broke their hope as in the later rounds they tried rushing us but we managed to keep our focus and stay frosty, again not losing a round. We won Terrorist 15-0
Before the game we had done alot of preperation for CT but after a strong hold on B by Novate we won the pistol round winning the half1-0 and the overall game

UNREAL TOURNAMENT - LAST MAN STANDING
candyKills vs 7 other teams
It was 2 per team so with previous experience of the game CrUnCh and =ARCON= stepped up the plate. (Sandy and WiLLy ). the rules were last man standing, 50 lives, 16 players. It was manic.
WiLLy took the approach of killing everyting that moves in the thick of it with the flak cannon and sniper rifle whereas I took a slightly more undignified route of hiding in dark corners and picking people off.
We reached the final 4 with
CrUnCh - 38 lives
Team RAT - f... - 29 lives
Ike - 14 lives
WiLLy - 4 lives
We agreed to go to insta gib sudden death, 10 lives each. We soon eliminated Ike and then WiLLy went on a rampage owning me 3 times consecutively (BASTARD!) In teh end the experienced guy from Team RAT elimated WiLLy after sneakily hiding on the outskirts of the map.
The final 2 were CrUnCh and the dude from Team RAT with CrUnCh losing out by 1 life. It was good fun playing UT again - DIIIIE BITCH

So onto the final. We knew our luck had to run out at some point
From the beginning we recognised that we were likely to meet these guys. This was the team who had 2 players who were in top 5 UK pro teams (as pro as the UK ever gets anyway) and one of their guys was the owner of the main ukcs website. They had even brough their manager with them. We knew we up against some experience as they too had owned in their previous 2 games.
It was widely accepted among eveyone in the room that Team-LEICESTER were the team to beat as they were known among them to be good players. A few guys near us wished us good luck as we had a challenge ahead.
We knifed for teams with plenty of spectators joining the server to watch the grand final. We lost this badly. Not a great start.
They chose Terroist and we started the game. You could definately feel the pressure from the start. There was alot of people in the game spectating as well as people watching over our shoulders as we took on the #1 seeds. We started badly, losing the pistol round by some margin and then the following 2 ecos. We didnt lose hope and proceeded with our first buy.
We played with Novate in the main, Sandy at cat and WiLLy at ramp. We were ready. We lost. The match continued and we fell badly behind reaching 0-9. I think all 3 of us felt the same, had we come this far just to get punked 16-0? Finally we managed to win a round making it 1-9 and some of the comments around us showed that people thought it was all over.
"ah man, at least it wont be a whitewash"
"bloody hell, those guys that rolled us are getting owned"
We seemed to be clutching at straws but we scrapped on. Thats the only way I can describe it as we managed to win another 3 rounds. None were convincing, all very scrappy but important rans none the less. We ended the half 4-11
After that most of the spectators the server and went to play other games. It seemed we were deemed to be and easy win and it was all over.
Before we started as Terrorist Novate turned to us and said "comon guys, we've done it before, lets do it" and we all prepared for our pistol round. We got ready with one outside and two main to hit on contact but disaster stuck as outside was hit early on and soon after main was taken out. We were 0-1 in what can only have been described as a must win round. We eco'd and again was sliced and diced making it 0-2. The spectators seemed right.
We had no cash, we needed to eco. We bought. We picked at main. We won.
And that was it, we seemed to turn a corner. We hit main alot and we managed to keep suceeding. We were 8-2 up and knew we were up against an eco. DISASTER An excellently timed attack where two of their guys popped out of the vent at the exact same time smashed us down with them winning their ECO. 8-3.
From there the nerves kicked in. Im sure we all agree that our palms were sweating like crazy but we kept our cool. We went up 9-3. A partial eco for them saw them push us in lobby. Novate and WiLLy were taken out as well as two of theirs. Before dying WiLLY smashed down the last guy who was retreating in yellow box before Sandy (with the bomb) threw a he_ off the wall directly in his direction.
Two things happened
BOOM
and
A gamer smashing his mouse on the table shouting 'FUCK'. 10-3. The next round was key. We needed both to win and with confidence riding high we continued to play agressively and it payed off. Two rounds won and a loud cheer from our little table. We had done it! We shook hands with each other and we were totally stoked for the win. It was a fantastic feeling! What a result

We had our pictures taken and won some ram and mousemats.
It was great to finally meet Novate and was enjoyable playing as a team right next to each other. Bring on some bigger tournaments.
